The "Apodosis" of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The "Apodosis", meaning the completion of the Christian celebration which began eight days ago, in this case the completion of the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and that of her Metastasis which is celebrated on August 15, is called by the people "The nine days of the Virgin Mary" and is considered a "commemoration", the memorial day of the Dormition of the mother of Christ. Similarly, a memorial service is carried out for humans, 9 days after the funeral. According to the tradition, this was a Jewish celebration taken over by the Christians, which is celebrated today in various parts of Greece with different ways according to the traditions of the region.
In Lipsi island, the icon of the Virgin Mary is unique, regarding the way that the Virgin Mary is depicted: she is not holding the Divine Infant but the Crucified Christ. Each year, parched winter lilies which are planted in spring bloom on the icon, while in Komotini in the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni Vathyryakos, Christians and even Muslims arrive by foot, after walking for hours to be on time for the Mass. Some of the churches that observe this celebration with glory are the monastery of Faneromeni in Salamis, the Panagia Eleousa in Kythnos, and the Panagia in Grava, Patmos.
On this day, many Christians in various parts of Greece choose to celebrate the names Maria, Marios, Panagiotis, Panagiota and Despina.
