Agia Kyriaki also won the Grand Prix laureate award
The Byzantine Church of AgiaKiriaki, in Apiranthos, Naxos, which won the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Award for its unique frescoes dating to the 8th and 9th century in category “Conservation” on June 22, received the sum of 10,000 euros and a commemorative plaque placing her among the Grand Prix laureates. This honorary distinction followed the initial award of the Church as one of the 29 winners for 2018.
During the ceremony which was held in Berlin were presented all the 29 winners from 17 countries. The event was co-hosted by the renowned tenor Placido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra and Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. AgiaKyriaki Naxos was singled out by a jury of experts who decides each time on the seven Grand Prix laureates, among the 29 winners of the Europa Nostra Awards. The event was attended by some 1,000 people from different organizations of the European Union as well as leading representatives of heritage organizations from all over Europe.
